Book title

If you enter something in this field it will be showing on your pattern. You do not have to enter the title here, you can alternatively enter a personal comment, which is then printed on the pattern.

First page number

The first page number entered is the first folding page with which you begin. The first page number of the first book sheet is always an odd number. If nothing is entered, the first page will be used as starting page. Since the prefix is not counted in the page numbering, it has to be entered with the value -1 if it is to be folded as well.
If a negative value, for example -200, is entered in the field 'first page number', the number enterable in the field 'last page number' will be reduced by 200. In effect, the maximum page number cannot be increased or the minimum page number decreased this way.
A book sheet is always comprised of two pages, the front page with an odd page number and the back page with an even page number.

With the first and last page number the book can be split and so several patterns can be created for one and the same book. For example, a book with 600 pages or 300 book sheets splits into
1. Pattern: First page number   1 last page number 200
2. Pattern: First page number 201 last page number 400
3. Pattern: First page number 401 last page number 600

Last page number

This program allows you to fold books with a page number between 350 and 450. The books thus have between 175 and 225 sheets.
If a negative value, for example -200, is entered in the field 'first page number', the number enterable in the field 'last page number' will be reduced by 200. In effect, the maximum page number cannot be increased or the minimum page number decreased this way.

Folding method

There are two basic folding methods, the Orimoto® program can create:
  • Graphic method:
For this method you’ll need a printer to print the graphic pattern.
  • Measurement method:
For this method you’ll need a ruler and a pencil or simply a paper ruler to transfer the measured values onto your book page.
Simply put, the graphic pattern is a paper ruler. It is also the quicker and more accurate method, since the measurements were not rounded and do not have to be manually transferred into the book.
If you have so far only worked with the measurement method and you want to test the graphic method, simply create two identical patterns, one graphic and one measurement pattern. Then compare your marks between both patterns by placing the graphic pattern on top of your book page marked with the measurement pattern.

Graphic method

There are six different styles of graphic patterns, which the Orimoto® program can create in the full version. Whereas the 'Black G' integrates all other five pattern methods:
  • Interupted G:
This pattern style is also called '45° fold only and it is the one you should be using when you fold your first book with the graphic method. Here the program specifies what you must fold if there are multiple interruptions on one book page. Thus, there is only one interruption to be folded on each pattern line. This is also the only pattern style included in the free Orimoto® version.

  • Green G:
This pattern style is also called '45° cut' and is used when there are too many interruptions on one pattern line (or on one book page). In this case with too many interruptions coming together on one page, the object can no longer be folded successfully with the '45° fold only' style. The book pages are cut along the specified cutting lines according to the pattern and then folded. The cutting depth should enable you to fold 45° dog-ears. Too small dog ears can be cut off.

  • Red G:
This pattern style is also called '90° cut/fold' and is the most difficult and elaborate way to fold a book. The cutting depth is variable.

  • Yellow G:
This pattern style is only cut on one side. It's identical to the blue pattern. The measuring version has a different entry in the table which is why it’s listed separately.

  • Blue G:
This pattern style is also called '180° cut/fold'. By cutting the pages to different depths, multiple levels and thus very delicate objects can be folded.
  • Black G:
This pattern style is also called 'Full G' and is the pattern style that combines all four patterns styles. This is a professional pattern style and only suitable for those with experience with the other pattern styles. Since the program does not mark interruptions and sets no cutting lines, it is best suited for non-monochrome pictures.
  • Colourful G:
This pattern type is also called 'Stripe G' and is the pattern type used for the Photo Stripe books.

  • Measurement method

There are five different types of measurement pattern styles, the full Orimoto® program version can create. Whereas the 'Black M' integrates all other four pattern styles:
    • Interupted M:
This pattern style is also called '45° only fold' and it is this one you should use when you fold your first book with the measurement method. This style provides only two marks on every one book page, [mark1] and [mark2], which have to be transferred unto the page and folded. It is also the only pattern style included in the free Orimoto version.

    • green M:
This pattern style is also called '45° cut' and is used when there are too many interruptions on one book page. With too many interruptions, the object can longer be folded with the '45° only fold' style. If the preceding line shows a [cut] mark in the pattern, the next line in the pattern is for that same page. The cutting depth should allow for a 45° dog-ear to be folded. Too small dog ears can be cut off. Please mind the page numbering of the pattern!

    • Red M:
This pattern style is also called '90° cut/fold' and is the most difficult and elaborate way to fold a book. It should only be used for objects with a one or two interruptions only, e.g. a heart or a star. The cutting depth and direction is variable, just like the folding direction. In appearance, the books folded with this style compare to books folded with the blue M style.

    • Yellow M:
This pattern style is cut and marked only on one side.

    • Blaue M:
This pattern style is also called '180° cut/fold' and in appearance compares to the red G pattern, but it is easier to cut and to fold. By varying the depth of cuts, multiple levels and thus very delicate objects can be folded. Please mind the page number on the pattern!

    • Black M:
This pattern style is also called 'Full M' and it is the measurement method that integrates all other four pattern styles. It shows all interruptions. After transferring all the marks onto the book, you can choose with which style you wish to continue.

    Pattern via

Here you can select how the created PDF document of the pattern will be sent.
    • With the default selection 'download' the pattern is saved directly on the device as 'Orimoto-vorlage.pdf' in your Download folder.
    • If you select 'Browser', the pattern will be displayed directly on the device.
      No saving is done.
    • If 'eBook' is selected (only possible when using the measuring method), the pattern is sent to the e-mail address, with which you are registered in the program. The creation of the pattern is specifically for eBook Readers eg. Kindle®, tolino®, Pyrus®
    • If 'e-mail' is selected, the pattern is sent to the e-mail address, with which you are registered in the program.
The email is always sent from 'vorlage@orimoto.eu' with the Annex file 'orimoto-vorlage'.

    Folding direction

You can start folding your book on the last page or on the first page. If the pattern was created precisely for the book height, it makes no difference which way you start.
    • Inside the book 'Wir lieben Papier' (we love paper) the descriptions always start folding on the last page.
    • Inside the book 'Orimoto®: Faltkunst für Bücherfreunde' (Orimotot: folding art for friends of books) the descriptions always start folding on the first page.
If the pattern is smaller or larger, the object to be folded will move up or down on the page.

    Position of your ruler

You can measure from the top book page edge or from the bottom book page edge and transfer the marks accordingly.

    Ink

The lettering or the silhouette will be colored in the color you’ve selected. This way you can save printer ink. Also, some people find it easier to see the object in a different color from the pattern lines. If you select 'Border only', only the border of the object is printed in all colored G-style patterns. If the upper and lower border are at the same position, the border is drawn in red.
Images you uploaded yourself will not be considered.
If you choose a very light color, you should be sure your printer is able to print it. The object is always visible in the graphic pattern file on screen but your printer might have problems displaying it.

    Measurement unit

By default, all values in the measurement pattern are in centimeters. They can be converted to inches. This input is then also used for the cutting lines.

    Rounding

The values in the measuring pattern are rounded up, as a value of, for example, 12.3456cm cannot be marked. Depending on the used ruler, the accuracy can be increased.
    Value 1/1 1/4 1/10
    Ruler INCRA® Matrix ruler
    12.3456 12.3 123 1/2 12.35
    23.4667 23.5 234 3/4 23.47

    Paper format

Select the paper format, on which the pattern is to be printed. ISO A-series (e.g. A4), or ANSI letter (e.g. US letter).

    Lettering

The lettering per field can have up to 4 to 5 characters. For multiline text you can press +. You can then insert up to 0 additional lines. Thus, 1-liners are possible.
The lettering can be combined with the silhouetts.
By choosing , and the lettering can be aligned with the other lettering ans silhouetts.
In the available fonts the following characters were changed according to the font:
    { } [ ]
    Win AltGr + 7 AltGr + 0 AltGr + 8 AltGr + 9
    Mac Alt + 8 Alt + 9 Alt + 5 Alt + 6
    { } [ ]
These characters can be inserted like any other character, for example, the input I}U or I}U turns into 'IU'.
The longer the lettering, the smaller the font size, because the proportions of the font are maintained by the program.

A selection of fonts is available here. This selection is not considered if you have uploaded a font of your own.
